Marine litter
As part of the Marine Litter Science Review Grant Project, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), in partnership with the UK Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and the UK Commonwealth Litter Programme (CLiP) hosted a workshop on marine plastic pollution in South Africa. The workshop, which was held in Cape Town from the 1-2 October 2019 reviewed current research and known evidence gaps in South African marine plastic research. The discussions focused around five thematic areas:
» Presentation: Land-based sources and pathways of marine plastics (H Bouwman, NWU)
» Presentation: Transport and fate of marine plastics (P Ryan, UCT)
» Presentation: Ecological impacts of marine plastic litter (T Naidoo, NWU)
» Presentation: Ecosystem service and economic impacts of marine plastic litter (A Nahman, CSIR)
» Presentation: Monitoring marine plastics (P Ryan, UCT)
The goals of the workshop were to –
- Present the draft science review papers to key stakeholders
- Obtain input in preparation of the papers for final peer-review publication
- Share knowledge about needs and priorities in future research in South Africa.
