Recycling rare earth elements from fluorescent lamps
Grant holder: Prof C Dorfling
Institution: Stellenbosch University
Grant: CSIR/IU/WRIU/2017/012
Duration: 30 January 2017 to 31 March 2019
Status: Complete
Project outline: This project aims to identify a sustainable and economically viable process for rare earth element (REE) recovery from phosphors in the South African context. Potentially suitable technologies / processes will be identified based on a literature review; laboratory scale experimental work will be performed to evaluate the technical feasibility of the different conceptual flow sheets and to identify remaining processing challenges that need to be addressed. These results will be used to model the different processes to compare their technical and economic feasibility.
