Objective : The aim of the Industry-meets-Science workshops was to interrogate the question –
- Can we, and how do we, create a local South African bio-based plastic industry in South Africa (within a larger biorefinery industry) (in line with the DSI Waste RDI Roadmap and Bio-Economy Strategy).
- That explores new market opportunities for existing resources, e.g. sugar, forestry, paper sectors
- That drives local content in biobased products already on the market in South Africa
- Thereby stimulating local economic development and job creation
Outcomes : The outcomes of the workshop were –
- Create the opportunity for government, industry and the research community to build networks with specialists, and to identify possible opportunities for their organisation, and
- Identify gaps in knowledge and support the uptake of industry research needs into the implementation of the Waste RDI Roadmap and Bio-Economy Strategy
