During the development of the Waste RDI Roadmap, stakeholders recognised the need for specialist post-graduate degrees in waste management to be offered in South Africa. Two universities were identified during 2013 to develop new post-graduate degrees specialising in solid waste management. Seed funding for the development of these degrees was provided by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). The intention of the new degrees was to provide a pipeline of trained post-graduate professionals for uptake within the public and private waste sectors in South Africa.
