Implementation of the Waste RDI Roadmap
The Waste RDI Roadmap, a strategic initiative of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) is hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
Department of Science and Innovation (DSI)
The Directorate: Environmental Services and Technologies is tasked with oversight of the national Waste Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Roadmap for South Africa. The strategic objective of the Directorate is to identify, grow and sustain a portfolio of high-potential science, technology and innovation capabilities for sustainable development and the greening of society and the economy. The waste sector is recognised as an economic sector that can be supported by such an objective.
Dr Henry Roman
Director: Environmental Services and Technologies
Dr Roman is a Director within the Environmental Services and Technologies Directorate of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). Dr Roman looks after a number of Circular, Green Economy initiatives including the Water and Waste RDI Roadmaps, the Imvelisi Enviropreneurship programme and the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas. He holds a PhD in biotechnology from Rhodes University, and has nearly 15 years of experience within the South African National System of Innovation (NSI), in various roles.
Ms Georgina Ryan
Deputy Director: Green Economy
Ms Ryan is a Deputy Director within the Environmental Services and Technology Directorate of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), that oversees the implementation of the Waste and Water RDI Roadmaps and drives the Decadal Plan inputs on Circular Economy. She holds a Masters in Development Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. She is registered for her PhD, Science and Technology Studies, at the University of Stellenbosch on the topic of “Green R&D”. She has worked in policy research specifically on the green economy since 2013 in both the private sector and NGOs.
Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has over 20 years of experience in applied waste research. The Waste RDI Roadmap resides within the Hosted National Programmes of the CSIR’s Business Excellence and Integration Unit.
Prof Linda Godfrey
Manager: Waste RDI Roadmap Implementation Unit
Prof Godfrey is a Principal Scientist at the CSIR and holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. With over 20-years of sector experience, she currently heads up the Waste RDI Roadmap Implementation Unit on behalf of the DSI, a unit tasked with implementing South Africa’s 10-year Waste RDI Roadmap. She has provided strategic input to a number of local, regional and international waste and circular economy initiatives. She lectures internationally on solid waste management in developing countries, including the social, economic and environmental opportunities of “waste” within a circular economy context. She has published extensively in the field.
Development of the Waste RDI Roadmap
The Waste RDI Roadmap was developed by the CSIR, South Africa and Mutualfruit Limited, UK, with support from Icando, South Africa. The Roadmap was developed through a participatory process, together with key stakeholders from business, government, civil society and academia.
